Doula Listings

A Doula is an assistant who provides non-medical and non-midwifery support (physical and emotional) in childbirth. Depending on training and experience they may offer prenatal support, childbirth (birth doula) and/or postpartum. A labor doula may attend a home birth or during labor at home and in transport to a hospital or a birth center. A postpartum doula provides home care for the first six weeks (or longer in cases of postpartum depression) including cooking, breastfeeding support, newborn care assistance, errands and light housekeeping.

Midwives are autonomous practitioners who are specialists in low-risk pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. They generally strive to help women to have a healthy pregnancy and natural birth experience. Midwives are trained to recognize and deal with deviations from the normal. Midwives refer women to obstetricians when a pregnant woman requires care beyond the midwives' area of expertise. In many jurisdictions, these professions work together to provide care to childbearing women. In others, only the midwife is available to provide care. Midwives are trained to handle certain situations that may be described as normal variations or may be considered abnormal, including breech births, twin births and births where the baby is in a posterior position, using non-invasive techniques.

A Surrogate or Gestational Carrier may request the services of a doula or midwife and below is a growing list from coast to coast.

My area of service includes but is not limited to Greater Rochester, NY Area, including all Rochester Hospitals, FingerLakes/Southern Tier Area...FF Thompson Hospital; Geneva General; Clifton Springs Hospital. I AM NOT OPPOSED TO MODERN MEDICINE AND PAIN RELIEF.  I realize that for some women, laboring without pain medication is very important to them, while other women feel that having some form of pain relief will make their birth experience a more positive one.  After doing your research, please feel free to trust your own instincts in this regard, as to what is best for YOU.  There is no "right" or "wrong" way to give birth.
Please feel free to contact me for a free phone consultation and more information on my doula, birth education or surrogacy consulting services. I look forward to hearing from you!

Guiding Heart Doula

My name is Jill Ferris, I am a Postpartum Doula and Lactation Educator serving Olympia and the surrounding Puget Sound area. When my daughter was born in 2009, I soon felt the need to help other families through this amazing, beautiful, challenging, and emotional time. My goal is to help other families share an emotional connection much like the one my husband and I share with our daughter, without all of the unneeded stress. In todays busy world, families do not always get all of the support they need while integrating a new baby into their lives. That is where I can be of service.
